A public meeting will be held in the Gasyard Centre next week to highlight the recent spate of anti-social behaviour in the area.
The meeting is being organised by the Republican Network for Unity (RNU) and will take place on Monday October 5th in the Lecky Road venue.

Tony Taylor from the RNU said the meeting is being organised to give local people a say about what should be done to tackle on-street drinking, vandalism and other social problems.

The move comes after a number of incidents in the area recently which included young people cutting down lampposts and lights at a pedestrian crossing and reports that fireworks had been thrown at pensioners.

Mr Taylor also said the RNU will be holding an event in the Bogside on Saturday to make people aware of the problems. “In spite of political changes in recent years, many working class communities across Derry have witnessed an increase in underage drinking and drug abuse which has manifested itself in anti social and criminal behaviour. Such a situation cannot be allowed to persist as such anti social and criminal activity acts only to demoralise and destroy once proud and strongly bound communities,” he said.

The RNU man also said it is fitting that Monday night’s meeting is being held on the anniversary of the first civil rights march held in Derry. “In the absence of acceptable policing arrangements and as a complex problem afflicting our community, it stands to reason that solutions must come from within our community. We therefore urge all residents from the area to attend, young and old, to participate and pool ideas to ensure that our area is safer for everyone,” he said.

Mr Taylor also said other public meetings are planned to discuss similar problems in various areas of the city.
